Assembly fixtures for consistent assemblies

Assembly fixtures hold parts in the correct position to each other while they are joined, crimped, bolted or clamped. CAD-IS designs and builds assembly fixtures, joining fixtures and assembly gauges for manual and semi-automated assembly. Using the same approach we also build welding and tack welding fixtures, for example for frames, tube and sheet metal assemblies. Every fixture is a one-off for your assembly, designed and built in-house in Karben near Frankfurt, Germany.

01

Matched to your assembly sequence

We design the fixture along your work steps: load, join, check, unload. Assembly becomes faster and less error-prone.

02

Wrong assembly ruled out

Form-fit nests and coding only accept the right part in the right position. Errors are prevented before they happen.

03

Design and manufacturing in-house

3D design, CNC machining and assembly of the fixture are done at CAD-IS, without external partners, so changes are implemented quickly.

Types

Which assembly fixtures we build

Joining and press-fit fixtures

For pressing in bushes, bearings, pins and sleeves. The fixture guides parts coaxially and supports the part where the force acts.

Crimping fixtures

For crimping sleeves, fittings and connectors onto tubes and hoses. Nests hold the line at the correct position and length relative to the crimping tool.

Clamp fitting fixtures

For fitting clamps, brackets and clips onto lines and assemblies. Stops define the position and orientation of each clamp.

Assembly gauges for line sets

For assemblies of several tubes and hoses fitted together. The gauge reproduces the installation situation. See also tube bending gauges.

Workpiece holders and assembly aids

Holders that keep a part at the assembly station in an ergonomic position, rotating or tilting so that all sides are easy to reach.

Mounting and test plates

Plates on which assembled units are located precisely for testing, for example leak, function or vibration tests. For the leak test itself see leak test fixtures.

Examples

Assembly fixtures from our design and production

Design models from our plant. Your fixture is built for your assembly and your workstation.

Design

What we pay attention to

Clear position for every part

Stops, centring pins and form-fit nests define the position of every part. Parts that could be mixed up are distinguished by coding.

Short cycle time

Quick-action clamps, easy loading points and a logical sequence save seconds per assembly, which add up in series production.

Ergonomics at the workstation

We plan working height, reach and view of the joint. Rotating and tilting units make hard-to-reach areas accessible.

Integrated checking

Check pins, presence checks or gauge elements show in the fixture whether all parts are present and correctly assembled.

Variants via change parts

For assemblies with several variants we use interchangeable nests, so one base fixture covers several variants.

Robust for series production

Wear points are hardened and replaceable so the fixture holds its dimensions for many years.

Process

From your assembly to the assembly fixture

1

Documents and quote

You send a drawing or 3D model of the assembly and describe the assembly sequence. You receive a quote within 24 to 48 hours.

2

Assembly concept

Together we define the sequence, where parts are clamped and joined, and what the fixture should check.

3

3D design

The fixture is designed in 3D, with a model review before manufacturing on request. Fixture design is also available as a separate service.

4

Machining and assembly

All parts are made on our 3-axis and 5-axis machining centres, then the fixture is assembled and set up.

5

Function test

We test the fixture with your sample parts. An inspection report is available on request.

6

Adaptation in operation

New variants, design changes or wear: we adapt the fixture, even if it was built by another maker.

FAQ

Questions about assembly fixtures

What is an assembly fixture?

An assembly fixture holds the parts of an assembly in the correct position to each other during assembly. It makes assembly faster, prevents errors and ensures every assembly is the same.

What is the difference between an assembly fixture and an assembly gauge?

The terms are often used interchangeably. An assembly gauge usually also checks the nominal shape, for example on line sets. A pure assembly fixture only holds and guides the parts.

What do you need for a quote?

A drawing or 3D model of the assembly and a short description of the assembly sequence. Quantity, cycle time and whether parts are joined by hand or with a press are helpful.

Do you build fixtures for presses?

Yes. We build nests and joining inserts adapted to your existing manual, pneumatic or hydraulic press. We do not supply the press itself.

Is there a minimum order quantity?

No. Every assembly fixture is a one-off. We also build several identical fixtures for parallel workstations.

Can existing fixtures be rebuilt?

Yes. For new variants, changed parts or wear we rebuild existing fixtures, including fixtures we did not build. Without documents, we capture the geometry with our measuring arm.
